This document outlines essential steps for creating a successful project management proposal for design phase CVE 4091. The proposal must effectively communicate why your team is best suited for the project, include a detailed Project Management Plan, and state the proposed design fee. Various stages focus on verifying the proposal and developing engineering details throughout the phases. Key elements include the Project Flow Diagram, Work Breakdown Structure, and conceptual construction costs. Proper organization and compliance with content requirements are crucial for grading at each stage. ###

Project Management Requirements CVE 4091 - Design 1
Project Phases • Design 1 – Prepare proposal • Purpose is to win the design • Proposal must state why your team is best • Must include a Project Management Plan in the proposal • Must include your proposed fee for design • Design 2 – Design the project • Verify the proposal @ 5% stage • Design phases @ 15, 50, 95,100% • Develop engineering details & construction drawings • Manage & report on status@15, 50, 95,100% • Integrate all design elements into unified project • Prepare display for Design Showcase in April • Estimate cost of construction @ 15, 50, 95,100% • Written report is graded at each stage
Proposal Contents-1 • Title Page – follow instructions • Letter of Transmittal –transmits your fee/price; PM signs • Table of Contents – separate tab for each section • Introduction • Project Background – focus the reader • Scope of Work – what’s included & what’s not • Project Site Map – where is it • Team Organization – who will do it • Project Management Plan • Project Flow Diagram – flow of tasks over time • Work Breakdown Structure – who will do each task • Design Budget (fee) – what will each task cost • Design Schedule (MS Project) – when will each task be completed • Conceptual cost of construction – cost to actually build the project
Proposal Contents-2 • Project Layout & Base Map • Base Map shows data on boundaries and major features • Layout adds “proposed” location and size of engineering features: roads, piping systems, retention ponds, etc. • All team members should participate in this drawing • Preliminary Design Investigation - each engineer • Written Technical Report – consult with engineering advisor • Include such items as: • Engineering problem(s) to be solved in the design • Logic of location &size of engineering features • Design options considered; cite the pros & cons of each • Applicable codes, ordinances or criteria that will control the design • Cite all technical information to be used in the design • Design decision – what engineering design method will be used and why • Constraints – cite any political, environmental or physical limitations • Global, Societal and Professional Issues • Appendices & List of References
Project Management Tools =Your Project Dashboard They enable you to be proactive rather than reactive…
Project Management Tools • Project Flow Diagram your road map/GPS • Project Schedule your speedometer • Project Budget your fuel gauge
Work Breakdown Structure Don’t forget To update duration At each % stage!!! WBS
Design Budget Budget Don’t forget To update duration At each % stage!!! Don’t forget To show totals At each % stage!!!
Conceptual Cost Estimate • Preliminary Construction Cost • Based on historical data • Itemize components: w&s, structure, roads, etc. • Similar project • Use cost per SF or similar data • Be sure to update for location & timing • Example: construct a 300-bed college dorm @ FIT Based on 2008 UCF example @ $25,000/bed Conceptual cost = $7,500,000 x .83 x 1.1 = $6,847,500
