Warm-Up • What does reliable mean? • What is a narrator? • Would you consider Montresor, in Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado,” to be a reliable narrator?
Essay: Due Oct. 30th. Choose one of the following assignments. • Is Montresor (in Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado”) a reliable narrator? Cite at least three reasons from the story to support your argument. • Select a short story we have read this year and write an essay that analyzes how a particular literary element plays a part in its essence and workings. Include at least three pieces of evidence from the story to support your argument. Ex: In “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, setting is essential to the story’s success. The importance of the setting can be seen in ____, _____, and _____.
Agenda • What are the parts of an effective essay? • What is literary analysis? • Crafting a working thesis and identifying support for your thesis.
Homework • Develop the organization of your essay by creating an outline based on the organization present in your working thesis. • Ex: 1. Setting is central to the effectiveness of “The Most Dangerous Game” A. This is evident in _I , II , and _III_. I. General topic of I. a. Focusing statement b. General evidence: (summary scene or event that gives context) c. Specific evidence: “quotation” imbedded in your own sentence. d. Warrant that explains how a, b, and c support working thesis. II. Repeat steps for I. III. Repeat steps for I. • AFTER you complete the outline, write the rough draft of your essay. Both the essay and the outline must be brought to class in hard copy for peer review. Your rough draft should be typed, if possible.
