  2. Ps. 94:12-13 • Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law [13] That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

  3. Blessed • Happy; very happy • Job. 5:17 • “Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty”

  4. Chasten • To correct or discipline • Whatever cultivates the soul – especially by correcting mistakes & helping to control the passions

  5. Chasten • May be “instructive” and “corrective • Instructive is designed to keep us from needing corrective • Instructive seen most often in the form of teaching – but can also be through suffering

  6. Chasten • Teaching or instruction that leads us to holy living

  7. Discipline • Instruction or training which corrects, molds and strengthens • Perfects

  8. Why Does God Chasten US?

  9. 1. Because He Loves Us • Prov. 3:11 • “My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction”

  10. Heb. 12:6 • For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

  11. 2. To Teach Obedience • (Instructive)

  12. Deut. 8:5-6 • Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee. Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

  13. Heb. 5:8 • Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

  14. 3. It Is For Our Good • Heb. 12:10 • For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

  15. 4. Because There Is Hope • Prov. 19:18 • Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

  16. 5. To Keep Us From Destruction • Heb. 12:11 • Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

  17. 6. Makes Possible The Saving Of The Soul • (Corrective) • 1 Cor. 5:5 • To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

  18. 7. We Become Partakers Of God’s Holiness • Heb. 12:10 • For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

  19. How God Chastens Us • 1. Not in anger • Ps. 6:1 • O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

  20. Ps. 38:1 • O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
