3. Why Men? • Constitute the other half of the population • Hold almost all key offices in the GO, private, judiciary and the church • Loci of authority at home • Men’s other problems are largely due to risky lifestyle • Major doers of violence and source of STI

5. Our research among married men would show that… • Only 42.6% know what domestic violence is • 20.3% of the respondents claimed that women are the source of violence at home • 25% both • 32.4% men • About 15% of the respondents expressed that it is acceptable to beat one’s spouse if necessary or as a form of discipline

6. MR GAD’s Specific Objectives • To harness the influence and respectability of men in key positions in the communities to advocate reforms in gender and reproductive health and become gender and RH champions; • To improve the handling and processing of the victims and doers of violence by community-based service providers • Office of the Social Services • Women’s Desk – Philippine National Police • City Health / Barangay Health Centers • Peace Mediating Councils • Church • Male Peer Counselors

7. MR GAD’s Specific Objectives • To provide enabling skills to men and manage their gender and RH problems: • Reduce violence • Reduce risky lifestyle behavior (alcoholism etc.) and • Adapt safer sex and reduce STI • Responsible parenthood including decisions on use of FP • To improve the gender and RH knowledge and skills of the different NGOs • Improve interventions and referral

8. Formation of MR GAD Advocates I am very thankful that I was invited to participate in this group.. This is my first time to be involved in gender and RH issues. I have learned from here that I too have responsibilities. (Roy Ryan Rigor, Head – Barangay Cultural and Community Affairs) I find the module as non-confrontational to men but it is able to deliver the appropriate messages. What hasbeen done by the MR GAD Advocates • Passed ordinance requiring doers of violence to submit for counseling; • Passed gender and development budget and used it to gender related activities • Constructed a counseling room in the Barangay Hall; • Signed Protection Orders to abused women without hesitation… • Called on inter-sectoral and service providers to regular meeting to update on the situation of gender-based violence; • Provided training to the communities

What has been done by the Network of Service Providers • Agreed on protocol of referral; • Share similar understanding and appreciation of the different forms; • Quarterly meeting to review on all the cases of gender-based violence in the communities • Conduct of counseling: • PNP – record and pursue cases including protection of women and children; • CSSDO – provide counseling • Barangay Health Center – manage those with health problems including bruises and wounds • Peace mediating council – provide counseling

Challenges • Young boys with aggressive behavior • Resistance to concepts of gender and gender-based violence is fairly common • Since many men are in the cycle of violence, the following are observed: • Justification • Excuses • Minimization • Denial • Sustainability mechanism for the program and the activities
