  1. Ratios and Proportions Created By: Mr. Kornfield

  2. Terms • Ratios compare two numbers. • Ex. of a ratio 1gal of gas : $3 • Ex. of a proportion 5ft. : 50ft. = 1ft. : 10ft. • Ratios also look like fractions, but it means the same • 1/3 5/50 1/10

  3. Terms Cont. • A proportion is an equation with a ratio on each side. It is a statement that two ratios are equal. • Ex.3/4 = 6/8 • Ex. 7:14 = 1:2 • Cross Product Property means the same as cross multiply. • Ex. v:w = x:y v/w = x/y • v · y = w · x • 3/4 = 9/x • 3 · x = 4 · 9 • Extended Proportion is a statement with three or more congruent ratios. • Ex. 30:6 = 15:3 = 5:1 • Ex. 1500:50 = 750:25 = 150:5 = 30:1

  4. Scale and Scale Drawing • A scale is the ratio of any length in a scale drawing to the corresponding actual length, the lengths may be in different units. • A scale drawing is a drawing in which all lengths are proportional to corresponding actual lengths.

  5. Scale Drawing Example B Scale: ½ in.:1ft. Actual Measures: Side A= 8ft. Side B= 12ft. Side C= 12ft. Side D= 8ft. Opening E= 4 ft. A C E D

  6. For Homework • When you go home choose a room • Measure the room to the nearest inch • Create a scale drawing that that includes a scale of ½ in. : 1 ft. (Use graph paper provided on the back of your rubric) • Make sure you include windows, doors, hallways, and openings if applicable • Work should be shown when displaying conversion measurements • Please include at least 3 pieces of furniture, make sure EVERYTHING is to scale • Make sure to include creativity such as color, designs, and any individual artistic features
