A History of the Memphis Red Socks: Pioneers of the Negro National League

The Memphis Red Socks, established in the 1920s, were a significant team in the Negro National Leagues. They became part of the newly formed Negro American League in 1937. Owned by brothers Dr. J.B. and Dr. B.B. Martin, both dentists, the team achieved its best season during 1923-1924, winning 26 games but never reaching the playoffs due to losses. Hall of Famers like Verdell Mathis, a stellar pitcher, and Waite Hoyt, a Major League standout, were part of this influential team. The Red Socks showcased players like Marlin Carter and Neil Robinson, leaving an indelible mark on baseball history.
