  2. Lesson Objectives… • Students will demonstrate the ability to use mental and emotional health knowledge, skills, and strategies to enhance wellness. (HE 900.10) • Evaluate personal health. (HE 900.10.03) • Describe the various components that make up the wellness component. (HE 900.10.03a) • Recognize the individual strengths and weaknesses in each component of wellness. (HE 900.10.03b) • Develop a plan for improvement/maintenance of personal wellness components. (HE 900.10.03c) • Describe the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and cultural factors which comprise the wellness concept. (HE 900.10.04) • Define self-esteem.

  5. Social Wellness • INTERACTIONS with others • Examples: forgiveness, culture, sharing, communication, peer pressure, tolerance

  6. Maintaining healthy relationships is one way of caring for your social health. This involves: • Seeking and lending support when needed. • Communicating clearly and listening to others. • Showing respect and care for yourself and others. • Have supportive relationships • Express your needs to others

  7. Physical Wellness • The Body’s ability to meet the demands of daily life • Eating the right kind of foods, exercising, and getting enough sleep are ways to care for physical health.

  8. Five areas of Physical Wellness • Cardiovascular Endurance • Body Composition • Muscular Strength • Muscular Endurance • Flexibility

Reduces the risk of dying prematurely Reduces the risk of dying from heart disease Reduces the risk of dying from high blood pressure Helps reduce blood pressure in people who suffer from hypertension Reduces the risk of colon cancer Reduces the feelings of depression and anxiety Helps control weight gain Helps maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints. Helps older adults become stronger and better able to move around without falling. Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of the following leading causes of death in the United States:

So…what can you do to maintain good Physical Wellness? • Get 8-10 hours of sleep a night • Eat nutritious meals and drink eight cups of water each day. • Engage in 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity everyday. • Avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. • Practice good personal hygiene. • Be free of disease

  11. Intellectual Wellness • The ability to obtain and use knowledge • Examples: Curiosity, common sense, logic, memory, creativity, understanding

  12. Cultural Wellness • Two components • 1. Accepting differences in others despite their religion, race, culture, ethnic background etc… • 2. How you are affected by those people and events around you (Can also be considered environmental at certain times)

  13. Emotional Wellness • The ability to identify and express your feelings • Example: moods, self-confidence, self-control, state of mind, stability

  14. Terminology associated with Emotional Wellness • Self-esteem- how you feel about yourself • Self-image- how you see yourself • Realistic Self-Concept- the ability to identify strengths and weaknesses.

  15. Laughter is an important aspect of mental and emotional health. It affects us in many ways: • Lowers stress levels • Helps with brain retention (memory) and learning by 15-50% • Improves immune system, lowers the risk of heart disease • The heart pumps more oxygen to the brain and the rest of the body • Increases muscles

  16. People who are mentally and emotionally healthy: • Enjoy challenges that help them grow. • Accept responsibility for their actions. • Have a sense of control over their lives. • Can express their emotions in appropriate ways. • Usually deal with life’s stresses and frustrations. • Generally have a positive outlook. • Make thoughtful and responsible decisions.

  17. Spiritual Wellness • The feeling of having a purpose and meaning in life • Faiths, beliefs, morals and goals
