  2. Writing assignment in Chemistry • Students are given a task involving reading and writing: • Read information sheet • Search and organise relevant information • Write an essay

  3. An exemplar of writing task: • With reference to the information sheet (a reading article & as a writing model), write an essay for F.5 Chemistry students about the science of rechargeable lithium ion cell in not more than 250 words.

  6. How to assess student’s writing?

  7. Generic Assessment Rubric • Mainly assess science-related knowledge and generic skills (e.g. communication skills, problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creativity) • Generally suitable for most non-practical related tasks

  8. Understanding of the chemistry knowledge is demonstrated. • Skills of information search and handling relevant to the task are manifested. • Ideas are communicated in a clear and organised manner through written accounts using appropriate forms of presentation (e.g. texts, diagrams, tables and graphs) • Competency is shown on handling the task.

  9. Chemical Knowledge • Characteristics of Li-ion battery e.g. structure, voltage, safety concern • Chemical principles including the half equations • Use of Li-ion battery in daily life

Assessment rubrics : • An assessment tool used to evaluate a student's performance after the assignment is submitted. • A working guide for students and teachers, usually handed outbefore the assignment begins in order to get students to think about the criteria on which their work will be judged.
