Swedish Massage Definition • A certain type of massage that employs certain techniques for relaxation and to increase circulation. • 6 Main techniques used: • Effleurage: Gliding strokes with the palms, thumbs and/or fingertips • Petrissage: Kneading movements with the hands, thumbs and/or fingers • Friction: Circular pressures with the palms of hands, thumbs and/or fingers • Vibration: Oscillatory movements that shake or vibrate the body • Percussion: Brisk hacking or tapping • Passive and active movements: Bending and stretching

  3. What Country Did It Originate From? • The origin of Swedish massage is often speculated, and under discussion. Some reports claim it came from Sweden, thus it’s namesake, others claim it was started in the Netherlands
