  2. Seek the Truth“But let every man be swift to hear…” • Be quick to make time for reading God’s word (Acts 13:42; 17:11,32; 1 Tim. 4:13; 2 Pet. 1:5; 3:18) • Use a reliable translation (KJV, NKJV, ASV, NASV, ESV) • Daily Bible reading schedules are available; schedule a time and place to study; structure a plan; be flexible • Make Bible study a priority; pick up your Bible first before a picking up a book about the Bible

  3. Seek the Truth“But let every man be swift to hear…” “Oh how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day. Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies; for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers; for thy testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, because I have kept thy precepts. I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might observe thy word. I have not turned aside from thine ordinances; for thou hast taught me. How sweet are thy words unto my taste! Yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and light unto my path” (Psalm 119:97-105)

  4. Stay on Track“Wherefore putting away all filthiness…” • Remove all barriers that creep into our lives and interfere with a study of God’s word (1 Pet. 2:1-2) • Begin your study with prayer and soul-searching; clear up sinful matters before your next reading

  5. Stay on Track“Wherefore putting away all filthiness…” “Blessed are they that are perfect in the way, who walk in the law of Jehovah. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, that seek him with the whole heart. Yea, they do no unrighteousness; they walk in his ways” (Psalm 119:1-3)

  6. Shape Your Thinking“straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was…” • Let your Bible reading and study be cumulative; go back and build upon what you have read; pray for wisdom (Jas. 1:5) • Take time to review what you have read; use your Bible reading in a lesson, a class, a conversation with others

  7. Shape Your Thinking“straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was…” “Thy word have I laid up in my heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O Jehovah: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the ordinances of thy mouth. I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches. I will meditate on thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word” (Psa. 119:11-16)

  8. Search the Scriptures“But he that looketh into the perfect law…” • To “look into” (Gr. parakypto) means to look intently and carefully into, not a casual glancing (Jn. 20:5,11); give diligence in study (2 Tim. 2:15) • Look carefully and concentrate on the words of your Bible; take note of the author, the audience, the time period, the context of what is said, the definitions of words, literal or figurative language, commands, examples, promises, different genres (law, history, poetry, prophecy, parable, apocalypse); take notes; write questions; read out loud and repeat; make use of a Bible dictionary, concordance, translations

  9. Search the Scriptures“But he that looketh into the perfect law…” “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law” (Psa. 119:18)

  10. See It Through“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…” • Your Bible reading is not an end unto itself; it should lead to a transformation in your life (Mt. 4:4; Rom. 15:4; Eph. 6:17; 1 Thess. 4:18; 2 Tim. 3:16-17) • Your Bible reading and study is not complete until you have applied it in your daily life; make a point to get at least one personal application out of your reading; use what you have learned; tell someone what you have learned

  11. See It Through“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…” “Teach me, O Jehovah, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight” (Psa. 119:18)
