  3. Two Points to Ponder • Not all questions will be answered in the text. The most interesting ones won’t be. • The best questions lead to other questions. AVRSB

  4. Question before you read. Begin with the title. What do you wonder about? Gangs Try It… I wonder…if this will tell about life in a gang? I wonder … why people join gangs? AVRSB

  5. Question during your reading. Are there words or ideas that you don’t understand? Are there things you wonder about? AVRSB

  6. Literal (the answer is there in the text) Gangs Being in a gang is part of my life. It’s not something I chose but something I was born into. My dad is in a gang and so are my uncles and brothers. Every time we loose someone close to us my mom cries. I’ve seen her cry so many times I’ve lost count. Me, I’m use to it. One Type of Question How did she become part of a gang? Oh, here it says she was born into it. Who else in her family is in a gang? Her father, uncles, and brothers. AVRSB

  7. Inferential (using prior knowledge along with what is in the text to make sense of the text) Gangs Being in a gang is part of my life. It’s not something I chose but something I was born into. My dad is in a gang and so are my uncles and brothers. Every time we lose someone close to us my mom cries. I’ve seen her cry so many times I’ve lost count. Me, I’m use to it. A 2nd Type of Question What does “lose someone” mean? I think they mean someone died. AVRSB

A 3rd Type of Question Why did the author decide to use the word “lose someone” rather than “someone dies” or “someone is murdered” ? Can a person ever really get use to death? AVRSB

  9. Question after your reading. What questions linger? What was your opinion of the story or article? What big questions about life or society does this story or article raise? Are there questions you want to follow up on? Gangs I found this interesting to read but wonder “Is this situation realistic?” What is her role in the gang? Does she want to get out? Why do people stay in gangs? Are there gangs in Nova Scotia? How many people are in gangs? AVRSB
