  1. Using formulas to solve problemslesson 1-6

  2. Lesson essential Questions What is the purpose of a formula? How can formulas be used to find the area of irregular objects?

  3. Formula-an equation that tells you how one variable is related to one or more other variables.

  4. Square area = a² Trapezoid area = h(b + b) ÷ 2 Parallelogram area = bh Triangle area + bh ÷ 2 Rectangle area = bh

  5. Solve formula problems • Write the formula needed to solve the problem • Substitute the values for the variables • Follow order of operations • Parentheses • Exponents • Multiply and divide left to right • Add and subtract left to right

  6. Find the area of a rectangle that has a width of 15 inches and a height of 10 inches. area of a rectangle = base (height) area = bh area = 15 inches (10 inches) area = 150 square inches or 150 in²

  7. Use the formula A= h(b+b)÷2 The height is 44 miles and the bases or 45 miles and 16 miles. Find the area of the trapezoid.

  8. area of a trapezoid = h(b + b)÷ 2 Area = 44 miles(45 miles + 16 miles)÷2 Area = 44 miles(720 miles²)÷ 2 Area = 31680 miles² ÷ 2 Area = 15840 miles²
