DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS • Our largest age group is 15 to 24 with the next two largest being 25-34 and 35-44. • Residents in the 15-24 population are considered digital natives (in addition to those on the lower end of the 25-34 range). They grew up with the internet and technology and are familiar with both. (Oxford English Dictionary)
TRADITIONAL CIVIC ENGAGEMENT RESULTS • There has been low turnout at both town meeting day and at City Council meetings (including other meetings such as a budget orientation). At the City Council meeting on March 17th, there was only one member of the public in attendance. Even for what was considered a “controversial” matter (the police budget), there was little turnout at the presentation. *will try to determine number. • 2013 Town Meeting Day Voters: 778 (15% of registered Winooski voters) • There were only 12 applicants for seats on the new Community Services Department Commission.
Where digital has worked • Front Porch Forum • Many residents use this listserv to post public thoughts and questions in regards to Winooski government. • It is an important tool to reach the community, get messages out, and build community. • There are over 3,000 subscribers (Winooski has a population of 7,267) • Online Parks and Trails Survey • We had over 250 responses to an online survey, which provided us with valuable feedback and helped us to form action steps to improve our parks. • 31% of respondents are 25-35 and 18% are 35-45 • 24% were 55+
What to do next • How do we get our largest demographic more involved in government? • We are currently using traditional methods of engagement (face-to-face meetings, calling in, etc.). Could we supplement those with newer/non-traditional methods? • This is a critical time to engage citizens at large because of the strategic planning process we are beginning to embark on.
