Short History of the Modoc Plateau • Late Cretaceous – Klamath Mountains separate from the Northern Sierra Nevada creating the Modoc Seaway • Miocene (~17-15 ma) - Flood basalts began to erupt, possibly precipitated by asteroid or comet impact • Basin and Range faulting has converted the flat plateau topography into mountain ranges and valleys.
