  3. Nuclear Family A family that consists of one or both parents and their children. It is the family form most recognized to Americans.

  4. Family of Orientation The nuclear family into which the person is born or adopted. This type of family is composed of the individual and his or her siblings – brothers and sisters- and parents.

  5. Family of Procreation When an individual marries, this family is formed. It consists of the individual, his or her spouse, and their children.

  6. Extended Family In many societies the nuclear family is embedded in a larger family group. This consists of two or more generations. In an extended family grandparents, parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins may all live in one house or grouping or even in different countries.

  7. Same Sex Families This refers to a couple of the same gender who either has a child or children of their own or adopts them.
