  2. Imagine 1 bright star with faint neighbouring stars

  3. Star Mapper detects the bright star

  4. saves the read-out from the CCD in a window around the star

  5. Detection data used to read out from the Astrometric Field CCDs

  6. Higher resolution, but smaller window around the star

  8. We have to get the data back to Earth

  9. there are many stars

  10. and limited bandwidth

  11. the data must be compressed

  12. For all but the very brightest stars the windows are binned

  13. becomes 18 216 pixels

  14. The Star Mapper windows

  15. must also be binned

  16. Later Gaia will see the star again

  17. at this later time the CCD will be at a different angle

  18. with respect to the star

  19. on average Gaia will see

  20. each star 85 times

  21. We can combine windows from the same star

  22. to try, to work out

  23. where the light is coming from
