  2. Foot Safety • Could heavy objects fall or roll onto your feet? • Are sharp objects present that could be stepped on? • Are there any hot or corrosive materials located in the workplace? • Do you work with electricity?

  3. Foot Safety • Answering yes to any of the previous questions means you should be wearing appropriate foot protection in the workplace.

  4. Foot Safety • Not all hazards can be eliminated • Wearing foot protection is just as important as other forms of personal protective equipment

  5. Potential Problems • Impact Hazards • Any time your foot may come into contact with another object with a significant amount of force • Example: stubbed toe

  6. Potential Problems • Compression Hazards • Pinching, squeezing, or otherwise crushing your foot with a heavy object. • Example: Dropping a heavy object on your foot

  7. Potential Problems • Puncture Hazards • Stepping on a sharp object which pierces the sole of the shoe and foot. • Example: Stepping on a nail

  8. Types of Safety Shoes • General • Impact resistant toes • Heat resistant soles • Metal insoles

  9. Types of Safety Shoes • General • Not all safety shoes are the same • One type of safety shoe cannot be interchanged for another • The first step in selecting a shoe is to determine what foot hazards will be faced on the job

Types of Safety Shoes • Electrically Conductive Shoes • Prevent against the build-up of static electricity • Specifically for workers in explosive and hazardous locations • Reduces the risk of producing a spark from static electricity • Conductive shoes should never been worn outside these facilities

Types of Safety Shoes • Electrical Hazard, Safety Toe Shoes • Non conductive, prevents feet from completing an electrical circuit to the ground • Protect against open circuits of up to 600 volts in dry conditions • Should be used in conjunction with other insulating equipment • Can be compromised if wet, soles wear out, metal particles become imbedded or workers touch conductive, grounded items

  12. Types of Safety Shoes • Foundry Shoes • Insulate the feet from extreme heat of molten metal • Disallow hot metal from lodging in shoe eyelets, tongues or other shoe parts
