The jewels sewn into their clothing provided unexpected protection against gunfire, leading to multiple shots needed for their execution. The discovery of their grave in 1991, two skeletons short of the expected count, sparked rumors of survival. Advances in genetic testing involving living relatives, including Prince Philip, facilitated the identification of remains, linking them to Alexei and one of his sisters following the findings of a second grave in 2007.

Finger Printing & Identification L/O: Utilise dental, other records, and other pieces of evidence to identify individuals. 17 July 1918 The Romanovs were executed without trial in a basement of the governors mansion where they were being held.Diamonds and other previous jewels sewn into the clothing and pillows of some of the women provided protection against the bullets fired – subsequently requiring multiple shots to kill them. Conclusion In 1991 Russian genetic testing of the discovered remains allowed for the identification, by using samples from the nearest living relatives (Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, being one). In 2007 a second grave was discovered a ‘short’ way from the original, containing two skeletons, tests were carried out and results published in association with Russian and American labs that resulted in the identification of the two as Alexi and ‘a sister’.
