MPLS Constraints/Complexity • Requires (IGP) OSPF and BGP to work • Requires VRF (Virtual Routing Forwarding) to work • Creates more than 5 routing/switching tables • Specialised knowledge to design, implement and troubleshoot Advantages/Power • Minimal migration disruption if well-planned • Does not require changes on the existing routing protocols/IP address allocation • Easy integration regardless vendors or protocols • Ideal for customization: Offers virtual/customised routing for a great deal of customers in 1 device when configured through VRF (MPLS/VPN) • Simple from the user perspective (compare to smartphones) Challenges • QoS implementation, even more complex due to mapping mismatch from the IGP • Adding features to simplify particular services • Control and monitoring of MPLS devices
