Growth Dynamics of C60 Magic Islands in STM Observations

This study explores the growth behavior of C60 magic islands observed through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It highlights how a significant 19.1° rotated C60 island on the left upper side acts as a strong sink, causing the adjacent island on the lower right to predominantly grow. The growth of the 56-mer is driven by the controlled switching of C60 flux, leading to the sequential formation of high-order magic islands. The results illustrate a stepped dependence of island size on C60 deposition time, offering insights into molecular growth dynamics.

  1. STM movies S2 Note that the “magic” C60 island grows predominantly from the right lower side due a presence of a huge 19.1o-rotated C60 island from its left upper side (which acts as a strong sink for mobile C60 molecules). When C60 flux is switched on, the 56-mer starts to grow through the successive formation of the high-order magic islands. This growth mode shows up in a stepped-like dependence of island size versus C60 deposition time.
