  8. REVIEW PROCESS SELF-EVALUATED QUESTIONNAIRE 176 researchers invited – 131 responded SITE VISITS BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSES WRITTEN REPORT

  9. BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS ISI database – 48 dental journals + dental papers in Science, Nature and PNAS 44 - 66% of the publications not included in the database 1981-1997 6.8% of all dental publications from Sweden 10.8% of all citations are to Swedish papers

  13. SELF-REPORTED QUESTIONNAIRE All researchers were individually reviewed The research group The research Assessment

  14. WRITTEN REPORT IMPRESSIONS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS Inherent conservatism in the system, preventing adaptation to new economic realities and changing needs in dental research Productivity of groups and numbers and quality of publications vary at the extreme To prevent stagnation, or even worse, parital collapse of the system, we recommend that a number of initiatives be implemented as fast as possible

  15. WRITTEN REPORT IMPRESSIONS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS Faculties should focus research activities independently on traditional teaching topics Decrease the number of research groups but increasing their sizes More functional integration with research groups at local medical schools The number of postdocs should be substantially increased and a career development opportunities should be provided Recruit staff members with different educational background than dentistry

  16. WRITTEN REPORT IMPRESSIONS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS Research schools should be established with formal training programs Odont Dr degree should be a fruitful start of a research career rather than the end goal Swedish Medical Research Council, together with the faculties, should arrange a National scientific meeting that can facilitate interactions and exchange of ideas The separate odontology priority committee with the reserach council should be closed but care should be taken to include reviewers with dental knowledge on each of other relevant review committees

  17. EFFORTS BY THE RESEARCH COUNCIL AND THE FACULTIES/DEPARTMENTS ”Sigtuna conference” December 1999 Researchers from the Faculties and other institutions Representatives from the private and community financed dentistry National Co-ordination Group Representatives from the four Faculties, Research Council, Swedish Dental Society, Socialstyrelsen, County Councils Post-doc positions combined with Residency training programs financed by Faculties and County Councils

  18. EFFORTS BY THE RESEARCH COUNCIL AND THE FACULTIES/DEPARTMENTS Four research assistant positions for four years –one per faculty 50% from the Research Counciland 50% from the Faculties Terminated program National Networking Group Platform for younger scientist to meet established researcher Three meetings with different topics –dental problems in elderly people, caries and periodontitis Terminated program Four positions as Researchers – ended up by one to each Faculty Ongoing program

  20. DENTAL RESEARCH IN SWEDEN 2000 – 2005 - a preliminary report PER JANSSON, Research Council Number of applications – 12-22 per year 1-1.5% of total budget for Research Council for Medicine to to Odontology Number of financed applications has been 2-5 per year Success rate has been 10-20% for odontology approx 30% for all applications
