Project M.A.P: Making Achievement a Priority • Collaborative Partnership • Purpose ~ To engage middle school students from low performing schools and their parents in a career exploration process that stresses the importance of academics, connects academics to preferred real world careers, and provides real world academic and career experiences.

The Need • Achievement Gap • 52,000 students in 5 districts • Most are minority & economically disadvantaged • Of 5 Districts • 4 met less than half of state’s 18 standards • 4 are in Academic Watch • Students Need: • Support for academic success • Real world connection of academics to daily lives • Vision of how school relates to real life • To explore career interests • Practical experiences • Information on new careers • Guidance from up-to-date adults • Successful transition from middle school to high school to college to career

Project M.A.P.: Parent Nights • Goal: Increase parental involvement and knowledge • Provide information on… • How to access & use Career Cruising • Career Clusters / Fields • Career Pathways • CTP (College Tech Prep), AP (Advanced Placement), and PSEO (Post-Secondary Education Option) • Mail : • Instructions for Career Cruising • CTP Newsletters • Pamphlets on middle school issues

Project M.A.P.: Summer Day Camp • Culminating experience at Stark State College of Technology & The University of Akron • College Tours including CTP labs • Third Frontier & Academic Focus • Interactive Research Project with SSCT Professors on Emerging Technologies • Business etiquette course concluding with a business luncheon • Canal Park Program : developed by UA’s College of Education and Akron Aeros. This applies math & science principles to baseball • Team Building Activities • IT • Akron Beacon Journal • Pro Football Hall of Fame • Health • Aultman Hospital • Children’s Hospital Medical Center of Akron

  8. New Format FY’06 • Location • Moved to College Campus due to after-school activity conflicts • Time Format • Four full-day Saturdays • Instructors • Recruit middle school education majors from Malone College • Instruction • Added closing Ceremony • Deleted Summer Camp
