  1. WELCOME TO CHORUS! WITH MS. SULLIVAN

  2. “Hey, I just met you…” About Ms. Sullivan • Graduated from ASU with a Bachelor of Music • (and again with a Master’s of Music) • My principal instrument was voice • I’m proof that not all chorus teachers are piano players! • This is my 8th year of teaching chorus at NWHS • My students gave me the nickname of “Sulley” years ago and it has stuck, feel free to use it (it has many alternative spellings: Sulli, Sully, Sulley…) • I have an 1 sister (older) whom I am best friends with and she is also a chorus teacher (West Alexander Middle School) • NO, I’m not married. (It always comes up, so there ya go.) YES, I’d like to be (waiting on my Mr. Right). • Hobbies: I love movies, playing with my 2 nephews, talking in random accents, being involved with my church’s youth group, being spontaneous, hanging out with my friends and family, and music (DUH).

  3. “…and this is crazy…” Bob Ross Remix

  4. Chorus at NWHS • BEGINNING CHORUS: open to anyone, all grade levels can be in this class, all talent levels can be in this class, we learn singing and theory basics • INTERMEDIATE CHORUS: open to auditioned freshmen, students who have an idea of music theory, can match pitch, varying levels of talent, maybe don’t want the responsibility of the next level • PROFICIENT AND ADVANCED CHORUS: a year-long class open to grades 10-12 by audition only, much more in-depth about singing and music theory, heavier time commitment, honors credit given

  5. Some things you should know and remember… • The chorus website, www.nwhschorus.weebly.com will be very important to you and your parents and will be used frequently. • WATER and water only is acceptable and encouraged during class. • Marking your music with a PENCIL is encouraged. You would be amazed at how much this can help you! • Please keep noise DOWN when you aren’t singing and UP when you are. • It is ok to make a mistake when learning something; do not sing softly because you’re scared (although that’s what we all want to do). Allowing me to hear the mistake enables me to correct it faster. • Don’t point people out if they don’t catch on as quickly as you do- just wait, I’m sure your time will come.

  6. Know and remember (cont) • Concerts are NOT optional! We rehearse with everyone present and adjust to the balance; if you are not at the concert then our balance is incorrect and the performance is not as good as it can be. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS AHEAD OF TIME! • Class is important and so are you, so you need to be not just physically present, but mentally present as well. • If you are having a difficult time and need help with something, PLEASE let me know! If it is not solved in class, I will happy to help you after school, breaks, or lunch (if your schedule allows).

  7. ARE YOU STILL WITH ME???

  8. “We don’t need ya money, money, money…” Wait, yes we do! • It may not be all about the “cha-ching, cha-ching” but it sure does take a lot of that to make a chorus program run! • I get it, no one LOVES fund raisers, but they are an evil necessity. When the chorus program does do a fundraiser, PLEASE honestly try your best. The money raised goes to things such as buses, bus drivers, tax and shipping, the folders that you use, sheet music, sheet music, annnnnnnd, SHEET MUSIC! • I’m open to fund-raising ideas that you may have and think will go over well!

  9. Make the most of it! • This class is what you make of it. If you come in with a bad attitude, you won’t enjoy the class NEARLY as much as you could. More often than not, this can be a class that puts you in a better mood and one that you look forward to. • Things that prohibit the above: • Bringing in your drama via text messages, FB, Twitter, or SnapChat during class- Just say NO to your phone unless I ask you to use it. • Not trying your best all the time (cheesy, yet true) • Not having an open mind • Being scared- getting out of your comfort zone CAN BE FUN! • Having a big ego- it’s about being part of a group

  10. I’m ready to have a great year and hope you are too! • We may not always sound like this: I feel badly for you if you like: • But we won’t sound like this! But we’ll be good friends if you like: • OR Concordia Choir Sister Act (start at 0:34)
