  1. Character BrainsAnalyzing the brains from The Notebook Allie Lon Noah Allie’s mom

  2. Allie • 1.Her love for Noah takes up a lot of the space in her brain. He was her first love and she will never forget him, “She knew that she had fallen in love with Noah Taylor Calhoun again, and maybe, just maybe, she had never stopped.” (page 110). This quote explains that once Allie had fallen in love with him she had never stopped. What they had was special and neither of them can deny their chemistry. Her thoughts and memories about him are non stop and that is why she can never get him out of her head because most of her brain is dominated by him. 1. 2. 2.The second biggest section is Following her heart. Allie has always Put aside her feelings for others. When Her mother told her to never see him again Allie had to listen to her mother and say good-bye. Now Allie just needs to listen to her heart in Order to make herself happy. Towards the end she will make a decision that could change her life and her mother supports her in whatever she chooses. She tells Allie, “Follow your heart.” (page 135). This quotes shows that Allie’s mom cares for her and just wants her daughter to be happy. She will support her in whatever she chooses. Noah Following her heart 4.The smallest part of her brain is listening to her parents. Allie has always listened to them and doesn’t want to anymore. She is tired of making them happy instead of making herself happy. For example, when Allie was proposed to her mother was very happy because it would make the family look good. Allie starts to make her decisions by herself towards the end when her mom gives her bad news and she has to make a decision, “I can’t make this decision for you, Allie, this one’s all your.” (page134). This quote explains how Allie is finally making her own decisions. Her mom is teaching Allie to make her own decisions now because they can’t make them for Allie anymore. Allie is a grown women and should decide what will make her happy. 3. 4. Lon Listening to her parents 3.Lon is the next big part. Allie liked him once she started dating him. He gave her what she wanted and took care of her. He was also rich which, made it even better. , “She felt secure with him and knew he loved her as well…” (page 17). This quote explains how comfortable Allie felt with him. She knew he’d always be their for her. But there was something missing between their relationship that she couldn’t figure out until she came and revisited Noah. Now Allie is having to deal with her first love and a man that cares for her very much.

  3. 3. The third one is Noah’s past relationships. Noah reminisces on the times when he did have a few girlfriends but none of them were like his first love. Noah goes back to them and realizes that his love for Allie is true and that she was the one. I think these relationships help Noah know himself and know how special his relationship with Allie was. Even a girl told him that she wished she could give him what he was looking for,” I wish I could give you what you’re looking for, but I don’t know what it is…your mind is on someone else.” (page 26). This shows that Noah still cares about Allie and even though he is not with her, he can’t stop thinking about her. These girls help him realize things and keep him from being lonely. 1. Allie is one of the most biggest things he thinks about. Both him and Allie think about most of the time is each other. Noah does work to try to get her out of his mind and like his friend Gus says, “You know, the ghost, the memory. I been watchin’ you, workin’ day and night, slavin’ so hard you barely have time to catch your breath.” (page14). This shows that Noah works hard and long to try to forget about Allie. Allie is the “ghost” in his memory right now. Noah even thought about her when he was at war. So one of the main things he thinks about is Allie. Noah 1. 2. Allie Friends and Family 3. 2. The second biggest thing is his friends and family. Noah cares about them so much. When he talks about how he is lonely and about how he lost his friends in the war it is sad. Now he has no one except for a few people he talks to occasionally. One of the most important people Noah cared about was his dad. He was very sad when he died. He tells Allie that, “He passed on earlier this year…” (44) when she had asked how his father was doing. Allie knew he was close to his father, “I’m sorry…knowing how much he had meant to Noah.” (page 44). These two quotes show that Noah cared about his father and how Allie knew how close their father son relationship was. 4. Past relationships Poetry 4. Poetry is Noah’s way to escape and relax. It soothes him. Even though it is not a big part of his brain he still thinks about it. Also when he is outside on the porch he brings out an old poetry book and reads it. He also remembers when he brought a poetry book to war with him and how it went through everything with him. His dad even introduced him to poetry to make his speaking better. He told Noah, “Learn to read this aloud and you’ll be able to say anything you want to.” (page 22). This quote is significant because it shows that once Noah started to read poetry aloud he lost his stutter which then made him more confident. So poetry is something special to him. I think it is what makes him unique in a way.

  4. 3. Family and Friends is the next on his list. He cares for his family and doesn’t want to disappoint him. His father is a very successful man and he is following him in his footsteps. Allie tells Lon, “Your father made the Hammond name famous, and you’ve probably been compared to him all your life. “ (page 80). This explains how Lon’s father is successful and famous. Lon doesn’t want to be compared to him and he becomes successful in his own way. Lon loves his family but it isn’t the biggest thing he is thinking about right now in his life. 1. The number one thing in Lon’s life right now is his job. In the book Allie talks about how he works all the time and how passionate he is about his job, “A successful lawyer…he pursued his job with passion, not only winning cases but also making a name for himself.”(page17). This shows that he is very dedicated to his job and that is his number one priority. Lon loves his job and is a very, very successful man. He knows how to play his cards and wins almost every case he does. Lon loves his job so much. Lon Law and his job 2.. 1. Allie 3. Past Relationships 4. 4. Lon thinks about his past relationships in the book. He talks about how he told Allie that he didn’t want to be in a relationship because that is what he has told all of his past girlfriends , “He’d said to her what he said to all women he dated—that he wasn’t ready for a steady relationship.” (Page 80). This shows that Lon wasn’t ready to commit to someone yet. But later he says that he called her back asking for a second chance which shows that Allie was different from the other girls he had been with. I think his past relationships helped him realize that she was the one that he needed in his life. Family and Friends 2. The next is Allie. Allie is his second important thing in his life. He feels guilty about always working and leaving her alone all the time. He loves her very much and can’t wait to start his life with her. Lon cares for Allie and looks out for her. He even said, “Once he was married, he’d shorten his hours, he promised himself.” (Page81) This shows that Lon cares about Allie and really wants to settle down with her. He wants to spend more time with her.

  5. 3. Allie’s mom’s former love made her connect with her daughter. She told Allie how she had fallen in love with someone too but her father didn’t approve. I think with Allie’s mom revealing this made her realize that she never got to find out how it could’ve turned out because she wasn’t allowed to and now she was doing the same thing by keeping her daughter away from true love. Allie even told Noah that she suspected that her mom didn’t love her father the way she loved him, “I don’t even know if she ever loved my father the way I loved you.” p59. I think she comes to think that she needs to let Allie make the decision for herself. This also makes them become closer to each other. “ 1. Allie’s mom loves her family and would probably do what ever she could for them. Even though Allie’s mom isn’t deeply in love with her husband she cares for him. Allie and her mom are like each other in many ways which they will come to find out towards the end. Allie does everything she can to make her family happy, “ In her mind , she was just trying to protect my feelings…” p 59 Allie’s Mom 1. 2. Her Family Reputation 2. The second thing is reputation. Allie’s mom loved a man that was like Noah but her dad disapproved and that is how she came to marry her husband now. Back then and still now it is all about reputation and Allie’s mom had to do the right thing in marrying a rich, wealthy man. Allie’s mom is sad but says, “It’s just that sometimes, our future is dictated by what we are, as opposed to what we want.” page 58. Now Allie’s mom is looking out for their reputation and wants her family to look good. That is why she would do anything for her family to make them look good. For example stopping the love between Noah and Allie by taking the letters Noah would write her and hiding them from Allie. 3. 4. Former Love 4. Wealth is what makes her and her family what they are. They are known for being wealthy and successful. This isn’t the biggest part of what she is thinking because she has other things on her mind. Wealth is a big part but I think she feels like she needs to focus on Allie. Allie’s mom has been wealthy probably since she was little and doesn’t seem to focus on that anymore. Allie comes to learn as she gets older, “That status is more important than feelings.” p59. So she is pushed to move on from Noah. Wealth
