Agenda/Topics To Be Covered The students will explain how urbanization created a new way of life that often clashed with the values of the traditional American rural society Announcement: Chapter 13 Test Next Tuesday Due: Chapter 13 Vocabulary on Wednesday Drill: Read the chart on page 455 and answer the following 1. What beliefs led reformers to support prohibition? 2. What was the primary result of prohibition? Motivation: What differences do you think exists between urban and rural lifestyles today?

Changing Ways of Life Ch. 13 Section 1 pgs. 452-457 Rural and Urban Differences Small towns from the 19th century conservative moral values close social relationships well-to-do families set community standards church defined morality/parents enforced the church thriftiness, moderation, and respectability Cities grew in size The New Urban Scene Competition and change New ideas as museums/art shows, plays, sports Judged people by accomplishment Tolerated drinking, gambling casual dating

The Prohibition Experiment 18th amendment outlawed the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol Alcohol led to crime, wife and child abuse, accidents on the job Anti-Saloon League Women’s Christian Temperance Union Volstead Act never funded and 1550 men could not cover the entire U.S. Speakeasies and Bootleggers Speakeasy is where people went to drink illegally Bootleggers brought in alcohol from Canada, Cuba, West Indies Organized Crime Al Capone Organized crime grew as a result of Prohibition

  6. Independent Work Explain how urbanization led to a conflict between rural and urban societies. Be sure to include prohibition, the emerging urban scene and evolution in your answer.
