  1. The Christian Family

  2. TEXT: Ephesians 5:18-21 • The focus of the Christian family is different from that of the world. It is to be:

  3. I. An Outward Focus • A. It is not to be one of self-satisfaction or enjoyment (Eph 5:18) • 1. Not “soaking up” but “spilling out” • 2. Our focus is to be concern for our family members • B. It is even to be the focus of our music (5:19 cf Col 3:16) • 1. What is unique about psalms, hymns and spiritual songs (Psalm 1; Luke 1:46ff; 1:68ff; 2:28ff; Rev 5:9ff;)…making melody to?

  4. II. An Upward Focus • A. Our mindset is to be thankfulness to God for our family (physical and spiritual) (5:20) • B. Our thanks is to focus on what God has provided through His Son (5:20) • C. Our mind is to be “like Christ” in humility and willingness to sacrifice our “rights” for the welfare of others (Phil 2:5-6)

  5. III. An Inward Focus • A. To be subject to one another (5:21) • 1.The concept of “honor” is indicated here (Rom 12:10; Phil 2:3) • 2. It is also indicated in a word with similar meaning in Eph 5:33, “respect” or “reverence”- Do you model that? • B. Submission comes because of knowing that Christ “cherishes” us (5:29; Matt 23:37), thus we need not fear (1 Peter 3:6b)

  6. So, is your attitude in your home, in your church, in your life one of love-based relationships and conduct, or one of fear-based relationships. Do you understand that God loves you and will protect you by His grace and power as you are submissive to His will and to one another? Has your life experience distorted that view and relationship. Would you like love to be the pattern of your life? It can be….it begins with you and the Lord and your submission to Him.
