  1. Common Core and More North Carolina State Standards Update

The Common Core • Began as a state-led initiative to establish a common set of standards in English and math (not a Federal Government initiative) • Designed by a diverse group of parents, teachers, experts and school administrators • North Carolina is one of 45 states and 3 territories that have adopted these standards in math and English language arts.

  3. Common Core English Language Arts Design • There are four strands: •Reading + Reading Foundational Skills K-5 (Foundational Skills: Concepts About Print, Phonological Awareness, Phonics , Word Recognition, Fluency) •Writing (includes grammar) •Speaking and Listening •Language • There are technology requirements blended throughout.

  4. Common Core Math • Our District core math program is still Math Expressions. • Through the work of District math “core teams” all the common core standards have been linked to lessons in Math Expressions. • The following chart shows the math domains that are studied in grades K-8:

North Carolina Essential Standards • The rest of North Carolina's Standard Course of Study has been completely overhauled and the new standards are being implemented in classrooms beginning this year in the following areas: • Dance Arts Education Essential Standards • Guidance Essential Standards • Healthful Living and Physical Education Essential Standards • Information and Technology Skills Essential Standards • Music Education Essential Standards • Science Essential Standards • Social Studies Essential Standards • Theatre Arts Education Essential Standards • World Languages Essential Standards • Visual Arts Education Essential Standards

Social Studies Essential Standards • The new Social Studies Essential Standards are organized around five (5) conceptual strands. • The strands provide a framework by which to organize concepts, generalizations and critical content that are important for understanding the disciplines of social studies.
