  1. What is critical analysis anyway ? Jenny Fairbrass and Martin Sedgley

  2. What do tutors look for in written assignments?

  3. What are tutors looking for in assignments … ? Usually two levels of engagement with the topic: • Descriptive …show clear understanding of main theories, ideas, models or practices, i.e. what theorists are claiming, or whatis happening in practice.

  4. What are tutors looking for in assignments … ? Usually two levels of engagement with the topic: 2. Analytical … show evidence for claims, i.e. why something could be true in practice, or perhaps cause and effect relationships, i.e. how one factor impacts on something else.

  5. Analytical assignment writing Practical application Why is this theory important for business ? Who says so ? How does it apply to your specific situation ?

  6. Analytical assignment writing Reach your own view through the evidence that you present from others.

  7. Skills • Evaluation • Asks/answers the question “so what?” • Assesses, weighs up • Ranks things • Looks for strengths/weaknesses • Looks for implications, meanings… 7

  8. Skills • Synthesis • Is about logic, structure and flow of an argument • Is about the way is which evidence is used and conclusions are drawn 8

  9. Example • GlaxoSmithKline has 99,837 employees and AstraZeneca has 64,200. • What kind of statement is this? 9

  10. Example • How would you go on to analyse and evaluate the descriptive data? • Interrogate the data! • Analysis: Ask why does GSK have more personnel than AZ? What are the causes? • Evaluation: Ask about the implications of GSK having more staff. Does it matter? How important is it to have a larger personnel base? 10

  11. What is critical analysis ? Critically analyse your group’s extract from a student’s essay in Understanding Strategic Management by considering the following: • Where are any of the four skills being demonstrated in your extract ? • Overall, how well is this being achieved ? Imagine you are the tutor and rate the extract on a scale of 1-10, where 10 would be a top mark.
