  1. Ms. Vertullo’s 7th Grade Language Arts Class

  2. Course Description The seventh grade English/Language Arts curriculum will closely follow the Common Core State Standards for Literacy. These standards are based on four areas of study: • Reading (literature and informational) • Writing • Speaking and Listening • Language Students will explore critical thinking across genres, cultures, and time in order to analyze, interpret, and evaluate texts, resources, and ideas that are grade level appropriate and complex. Using these analytical and interpretation skills, students will create precise, cohesive, and mechanically sound work that is expressive, argumentative, and informative in nature. One of the key requirements of the Common Core State Standards for Reading is that all students must be able to comprehend texts of steadily increasing complexity as they progress through school. By the time they complete the core and graduate, students must be able to read and comprehend independently and proficiently the kinds of complex texts commonly found in college and careers. The progression of Reading standard 10 defines required grade-by-grade growth in students’ ability to read complex texts. Students need opportunities to stretch their reading abilities and experience the satisfaction and pleasure of easy, fluent reading. The general movement during a given school year is toward texts of higher levels of complexity.

  3. Grading Policy • Tests and Projects 45% • Quizzes and Class work 45% • Homework 10%

  4. Tutoring Times Extra help will be available on Tuesdays from 7:45 – 8:30 on an as needed basis. It can be arranged at either the teacher’s or student’s urging but needs to be requested with some degree of prior notice to avoid scheduling conflicts.

  5. Late Work Policy Homework will be written in the agenda daily. Parents are expected to check the agenda daily and make sure work is completed. If homework is not completed, students will receive a zero if the assignment is graded.

  6. Late work must be turned in but will result in a loss of points. Homework is expected to be complete when class begins. • Graded homework will receive a grade of 50 when turned in after this time. If late homework is not complete within one school day, the assignment will receive a zero. • Late projects and final draft writing will be penalized 10 points per day late.

Quarter 1 Novel: Lord of the Flies byWilliam Golding Reading Literature: Story Elements: -Plot, setting, characterization, theme, etc.; -Compare and contrast written story to its filmed version Reading Informational Text: -author’s purpose, -text features - summarization Achieve 3000 articles. Grammar: sentence parts parts of speech complements Argumentative and Expository Writing

Quarter 2 Novel: The Jungle Book byRudyard Kipling Reading Literature: How elements of a story interact -Point of view -Fiction within historical context -Poetry and its elements -Author’s style Reading Informational Text: -Author’s purpose -Analyze how two or more authors writing about the same topic emphasize different aspects -Persuasive techniques -Achieve 3000 articles. Grammar: -The phrase -The clause -Simple, complex, compound, and compound/complex sentences Argumentative and Expository Writing

Quarter 3 Novel: Hiroshima byJohn Hersey Reading Literature: -More poetry and its elements -Compare and contrast historical fiction to non-fiction Reading Informational Text: -Author’s purpose and bias -text structure -Analysis of interactions between individuals and events in a text -Principles of research Achieve 3000 articles. Grammar: -Subject and verb agreement -Using verbs correctly -Pronouns and modifiers Argumentative and Expository Writing

  12. Quarter 4 Play: The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams End of Grade test review of all previously listed skills from first three quarters. Achieve 3000 articles. Grammar: -Review capitalization Spelling Punctuation Argumentative and Expository Writing
