  5. Dress • Students are to wear scrubs to lab – does not have to be the ACC teal scrubs • Must have closed toe shoes • Hair off collar of uniform • Fingernails short; no artificial nails or gells. • No excessive jewelry. Cover tattoos.

  6. Unit I Orientation to RNSG 1105 Nursing Skills I

  7. Course Description • Study of concepts and principles essential for demonstrating competencies in the performance of nursing procedures. • Topics include knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values in a legal / ethical framework.

  8. Nursing Skills I – Course Objectives 1. Describe concepts and principles that are basic to the safe performance of nursing skills 2.Demonstrate competence in performance of nursing procedures 3. Communicate clearly the English language in speaking, reading, and writing during performance and evaluation of nursing procedures and simulated nurse- patient interactions. 4. Demonstrate the values of the nursing profession.

  10. Course Requirements • Attendance – mandatory!! If you must be absent– you must contact the instructor prior to class & plan to make it up. • Learning Guide – Complete Learning Guide and highlight anything unclear prior coming to class. • Power Point – Review PowerPoint Guide and highlight anything unclear prior coming to class. • Printouts - Print out anything from the Blackboard site that states “print and bring to class.” • Schedule Labs – You are expected to identify your learning needs and take full advantage of the opportunities in the learning lab. • Open Labs - Use open lab time for independent study / practice, small groups study / practice, and validating your learning. 

  11. Successful completion Theory: • Have a theory grade average of 75% or above from the exams and final. <75% you will fail the course. The theory grade will not be averaged with the skill performance grade if the average is >75. Skill Performance: 2.Satisfactory pass all mastery skill check-offs and have an average of 75% or above. Satisfactory passing of all mastery skill check-offs a. Pass 1st attempt = Score of 100. b. Fail 1stattempt, get a 2nd attempt. Pass = Score of 50. c. Fail 2ndattempt = Withdrawnfrom the course.

  12. Grading Policy • 60% grade comes from the Theory exams • Tests 1-3 count - 20% (of theory portion) • Final exam counts double - 40 % • 40% grade comes from check-offs • Check-off 1-3 = 20% (of check-off portion) • Comprehensive mastery check-off = 40%

  13. Grading Policy • This course follows grade policy as described in the ACC ADN student handbook. • A= 91-100 • B= 83-90 • C=75-82 • D=60-74 • F=below 60 ** Note- this is different from other courses • You must make a C in all nursing courses to continue in nursing.

  17. Definition of Nursing • The word nurseoriginated from the Latin word nutrix– which meaning “to nourish.” • Nursing has evolved through history from a technical service to a person-centeredprocess that allows maximizing of human potential.

  18. Essential Competencies in Meeting the Aims of Nursing • Essential competencies in providing safe nursing care include: • Cognitive Skills – have to think • TechnicalSkills– have to do • InterpersonalSkills– have to care • Ethical/ Legal Skills – have to obey the rules

  19. Cognitive /IntellectualSkills • Involve nursing knowledge & critical thinking to provide safe, intelligent nursing care. • Must be able to think critically in order to problem solve and find the best solution to meet a patient’s needs.

What is Critical Thinking ? • Process that challenges the nurse to interpret and evaluate information / data to derive judgments. • Organizing information • Picking out relevant information • Judgments are made—based on reason and rationale rather than on prejudice, preference, self-interest, or fear. • Overtime, nurses expertise increases, learning from successes and failures.

  21. TECHNICAL / PSYCHOMOTOR SKILLS • Nursing Procedures (Actions) that provide direct care to the patient. • This will be our main focus this semester- performance of skills

  22. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS • Activities that people use when communicating with each other Nurse must communicate with the patient, family and members of the health care team. • Assists the nurse to be perceptive to the needs of the patient

Professional Nursing Organizations • A criteria of a profession is having a professional organization that sets standards for practice and education. • Nursing’s professional organizations are: • American Nurses Association • National League for Nursing • Testing • National Council Licensure Examination

  30. Guidelines for Practice • As a nurse, your actions are guided by legal standards of nursing practice. • TBON- Nurse Practice Acts • TJC =National Patient Safety Goals

Nurse Practice Acts • The Texas Board of Nursing legally defines and regulates the scope of nursing practice in Texas, establish criteria for education, and licensure. • Each nurse / student is held legally responsible and accountable for meeting the standards of nursing practice. • You should NEVER act beyond your “Scope of Practice”

  32. 2012 HospitalNational Patient Safety Goals • The purpose of the National Patient Safety Goals is to improve patient safety. The Goals focus on problems in health care safety & how to solve them. 2012

  33. Goal 1: Improve Accuracy of Patient Identification • Use at least two ways to identify patients. 1. Patient’s name 2. Medical record number. This is done to make sure that each patient gets the medicine and treatment meant for them.

  34. Goal 2: Improve communication among caregivers • Quickly report important results of tests and diagnostic procedures to the right staff person.

  35. Goal 7: Reduce the risk of health care–associated infections. • Use the hand cleaning guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization. • Use proven guidelines to prevent infections that are difficult to treat.
