  1. Characteristics of a Relative Clause: • Dependent clauses used to give additional information about a noun. • They follow the noun which they describe. • They are sometimes called adjective clauses.

  2. RelativeClauses • Theystartwith a relativepronoun: That, which, where, when, who, whose, and whom • Thecorrectrelativepronoundependsonwhatnountherelativeclause describes.

  3. How do I know the difference between that and which? • If it is essential to the sentence, then use that. • If it is nonessential, then use which and set it off with commas. • So, if you can take it out and it changes the meaning of the sentence, use that. • If you can take it out and it doesn’t interfere with the meaning of the sentence, use which and put commas before and after it.

  4. Practice Find the relative clauses in the following sentences: 1. This type of cheese, which smells delicious, is called Limburger. 2. My favorite kind of tree is one that has branches I can climb. 3. The man who robbed you has been arrested. 4. This is the picture that caused such a sensation. 5. All the apples that fall are eaten by the pigs. 6. Peter, whom everyone suspected, turned out to be innocent. 7. That house, which cost 5 million to build, has been empty for many years.
