Global Snapshot: China • China escaped the brunt of the 2008 collapse but is struggling with inflation • China’s average inflation rose by 4.5%; its food prices rose by 10.5% • This is because China is growing TOO fast, at a rate of 9.2% in2011 (America grew 2.5% in 2011) • China is expected to grow 8.5% this first quarter • The IMF predicts that China will pass the US as the largest economy in 2016 • China is already the largest exporter in the world • China is facing a multitude of issues in the near future
Because of the one-child policy, China has one of the most rapidly aging populations • China will have to deal with environmental pollution in long-term health issues (air quality, water quality, etc.) • Sustaining this level of growth will be difficult; China is only able to keep its citizens under control as long as it can promise economic prosperity • China is facing social issues which coincide with rising wages as China industrializes • Private investment in China is still difficult because of governmental concerns ; foreign capital fell by 65% in December • As China grows, bilateral relations with the US will become more difficult
Occupy Los Osos • On April 20-21, American Cancer Society will be hosting its second annual Relay for Life at Los Osos, an event dedicated to creating awareness about the terrible effects of cancer and research being done to find the cure. • The basic structure of the relay is a team that will help spread awareness of the event throughout the student body, as well as participate in the various fun activities that will be hosted at the Relay. • We will have bands, balloon fights, all-you-can-eat Chik-fil-A and pizza, Starbucks, a Mr. Relay pageant, prize raffles, a Luminaria ceremony, and MUCH more! • FIA is going to host Relay for Life team(s) under the collective name of Occupy Los Osos and we need your help to make our efforts a phenomenal success!
Why You Should Join • Community Service Hours • You can get 12+ hours of community service through this event, which doesn’t require any hard work. • Hang out with your friends for an entire night with free food, drinks, games, and prizes! • Hours are transferable to every service club at Los Osos High School. • Camp inside the natural and scenic beauty that is Los Osos High School!
Why You Should Join (cont.) • Our Relay for Life is unique. • There are only 11 high school Relay for Life events in the entire state of California. By joining one of them, you are setting a precedent in making a difference on the high school level. • Hone your marketing skills and increase your business contacts • We will be setting up a sponsorship committee for Occuppy Los Osos that will be asking local businesses and organizations for support. • Fundraising individually will allow you to hone your fundraising skills and ability to persuade, elements which are crucial to the world of business and finance • A local JPMorgan Chase branch has already decided to sponsor us! :D
Why You Should Join (cont.) • Raising $100 for Relay for Life is very easy! • You have 3 months to raise a mere $100! • In perspective: Ask 5 relatives for $10 a week for two weeks. DONE. • American Cancer Society offers recognition and prizes to those who go above $100 in fundraising! • See ACS prizes list. • In addition, Los Osos FIA will be offering recognition through trophies and certificates to those who raise over $100. • Moreover, people who raise over $100 will have an extra $50,000 added to their final investment portfolio for the second semester stock game! • We believe that dedication to raising money for a philanthropic cause supported by FIA should be taken into account in our investment game rankings.
How You Can Participate • We have sign-up sheets in the front for those of you who are interested in receiving updates on Occupy Los Osos and haven’t signed up already. We heavily encourage you to at least sign up for updates. • Once you sign up for updates, we will give you more information on how to join our Relay for Life team! • Sign up as soon as possible because spots are being filled up! • Spread the word! • Sign up and ask/threaten your friends to join our Occupy Los Osos movement or participate in our Relay for Life! • The more friends that you convince to join, the more fun you will have at the event! • Start Fundraising! :D • Keep in mind this event occurs on the same weekend as FBLA’s State Leadership Conference. • However, you can still help fundraise the $100 and gain prizes and recognition while making an impact on the community.
