Introduction • 'Sport has the power to change the world, it has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else can, it speaks to youth in a language they understand, sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers; it laughs in the face of all types of discrimination' Mandela (2000). Strategic Use of Sport Sport Regardless Leads to Positive Social Change

Context of SDP • The Idea that sport in and of itself adopted within the remit of development will positively contribute towards upward social mobility regardless of culture, power, history and politics (Levermore 2008). • Now we are not simply suggesting that Nelson Mandela’s speech created the SDP movement, but it is interesting to note how the SDP field has intensified since the early 2000s (Burnett 2015) and this intensification can be attributed in some small part to the now infamous speech of Mandela and sport.
