THE SITUATION: • Your mission group is designing and building a robot which will be able to travel into the caldera of an active volcano. • The robot’s job is to get geologic data on • A) the temperature changes • B) gas percentages in the air pocket within the caldera • C) rock types found within the caldera • D) depth of the caldera into the mantle • E) molten rock (lava) sample • The robot’s other job is to get atmospheric (meteorological) data surrounding the caldera (on both the windward, directly overtop, and the leeward side). • The robot should get data on • A) electrical charges that occur around the caldera • B) precipitation chemical analysis on both windward and leeward sides of the mountain • C) sulfur dioxide counts on both the windward and leeward sides of the mountain • Create a plan based on collected data (which will need to be predicted) as to how to reduce the formation of “vog” (volcanic smog)

  3. HGRE • 2. THE PROBLEM: • Air quality on the leeward side of an active Hawaiian volcano is of grave concern to residents. Mount Kilauea on the Big Island has been erupting for over 30 years, and is suspected of having a deleterious effect on the surrounding air currents. • “Vog,” a combination of sulfur dioxide, water vapor, and volcanic ash has formed and rolled down the mountain’s leeward side. • Your research team is assigned the task of developing a robot which will gather data from • a) inside the volcano • b) the air surrounding the outside of the caldera.

The final project must include the following steps, listed on a tri-board, powerpoint, or google slides format: • -PROBLEM/QUESTION • -RESEARCH: You must find 10 documentable facts on each of the following: EARTHQUAKES / TECTONIC PLATES PARTS OF A VOLCANO MANTLE AND CRUST RICHTER SCALE LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE LIGHTNING WATER CYCLE CLOUD FORMATION BAROMETER AIR PRESSURE

  5. REQUIREMENTS: • You may use: • NOAA and USGS sites • RED SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS • College or University websites • Any references found off of the library databases used for Genius Hour • Any websites PRE-APPROVED by your teacher • Wikipedia IS NOT ALLOWED • -HYPOTHESIS:

REQUIREMENTS: • -TEST: • The steps you followed to construct your robot • The steps of the experiment • At least 5 facts you learned from your research that you used when you built the robot • At least 2 meteorology facts and 2 geology facts you learned from class that you used when you built the robot….if there is overlap, just explain  • A creative video where your mission group explains the test (you can film it as if it were a live news report, news feed, or a scientific presentation) • -ANALYSIS OF DATA: • A testable model of the robot (LEGO MINDSTORMS and teacher will provide a “volcano” and “volcanically effected weather” obstacle course for testing). • A plan for controlling Vog (improving air quality) based on predicted findings • The mission group will write up the data results after the “project testing date (TBD)” • -CONCLUSION: • The conclusion will be written up by the mission group with their analysis

REQUIREMENTS • Mission Groups will show their videos on their “TESTING DATE.” The “TESTING DATE” is the day their creation is put to a simulated test. • Mission Groups need only have their PROBLEM through TEST section of their presentation finished prior to their “TESTING DATE.” • They will complete their ANALYSIS of DATA and CONCLUSION after the TESTING DATE.
