  1. Literary Institute • Initially “School of Mechanics” later “The School of Arts” erected building in 1894/95 on 40 metre block of land on Jonson Street extending south from Post Office • Half of land and old building sold 1906; becomes auction house/grocery • Construction of larger new “School of Arts” building starts in 1906 on retained land adjacent to Post Office • New building opened April 1907; includes library and reading room, dance hall, meeting rooms and billiard room • Name changed to “Byron Bay Literary Institute” in 1913 • Roller skating commences in 1913, silent movies in 1917, “talkies” in 1931; movies cease in late 1960’s as television takes over • Building remodelled in mid 1930’s • Major repairs in 1980/81 and renamed “Byron Bay Community Centre” • New and current “Byron Community Centre” building completed 2002
