  5. How AES Works • Transmit shipment commodity data to AES with your ID and reference number • AES processes data against edit tables and agency requirements • AES responds with an acceptance or non-acceptance message

  6. How AES Works (cont.) • Deliver merchandise to the carrier and provide an AES exemption statement on bill of lading, AWB, etc. • “No SED Required AES EIN SRN” • Carrier files manifest electronically within 10 days (vessel)

  7. AES Communication Choices • Develop own software: • ANSI X.12 • UN-EDIFACT • Customs proprietary format • Purchase software from an AES certified software vendor • File through an AES service center • Dial-up, leased line, or frame relay

  8. Participation in AES • AES - operational in July 1995 • 516 companies filing SED data on behalf of 70,000 exporters monthly! • Commodity data lines filed in AES: • 12,500,000 (through Oct. 2000) • 64% of data in the trade statistics

  9. www.aesdirect.gov • Free, Internet-based service • Shipper’s Export Declaration (SED) filing to AES • E-business alternative to the SED • Can be used by exporters, forwarders, or anyone else responsible for filing an SED

  12. How to get started with AESDirect • Go to www.aesdirect.gov • Complete on-line registration form • Read the terms and conditions • Complete the tutorial and quiz • Receive email authorization • Log in and start filing AES!

  13. Current Participation • AESDirect operational on 10/4/99 • Over 3,000 companies have registered, taken tutorial, and passed the quiz • Over 2,500 companies filing • Number of SEDs: • Over 100,000 a month • Over 700,000 through Oct. 2000

  14. AESWebLink • Enhancement to AESDirect • Integrates commercial web applications with AESDirect • Operates as an Internet plug-in • Complete developers kit available on AESDirect • Ten certified applications

  15. How AESWebLink Works • Client accesses your application • Client completes B/L, SLI, etc. • If an SED is required: • Your application creates a data record • Record and client passed to AESDirect via AESWebLink • AESDirect then solicits remaining data
