  2. Curriculum for Excellence The curriculum is the totality of experiences which are planned for young people through their education. The 4 contexts for learning: The ethos and life of the school. The curriculum areas and subjects. Interdisciplinary learning. Opportunities for personal achievement. Skills development for learning, life and work.

  3. S1 – S3 Broad General Education The 8 curricular areas: • Languages • Mathematics • Sciences • Social Subjects • Technologies • Expressive Arts • Health and Well-being • Religious and Moral Education Across learning themes of Literacy, Numeracy and HWB.

  4. S4 – S6 Senior Phase The Examination Phase. National Qualifications now being delivered in schools: National 1-3 National 4 National 5 Higher Advanced Higher How do they compare with the old examination structure?

  5. Assessment N 1 – N4 – marked and assessed by the school. National 4 – Courses are made up of units including the ‘added value unit’. Students need to pass all of these to gain the award. National 5 – Advanced Higher – Pass all units and a Final SQA Examination in May/June will also be sat. (some exceptions) In the main, all projects, assignments and portfolio work will be marked by class teachers and moderated and verified by SQA.

  6. SQA Results: By post /e-mail in August. N2 – N4 will be awarded Pass/Fail. N 5 – Advanced Higher – Grades A - D then ‘no award’. *If a pupils fails N5 and has passed the N4 AVU, they will automatically be awarded the N4 qualification. Unit work passed will accrue SCQF credit points and will be included in the ‘Record of Attainment’.

  7. Results services for Appeals For all Qualifications in 2014 onwards. There are 2 types: Prior to examination – Exceptional circumstances e.g bereavement, serious illness. Evidence submitted by the school to support the estimated grade and claim. Post Results Service: Clerical Check – total the scores etc Marking Review – remark the paper. Will not consider extra evidence, grades can go up and down – costs incurred if the grade is not changed.

  8. Progression in the Senior Phase • National 4 will progress to National 5 • National 5 will progress to Higher • Unit passes at Higher is progression from N5 even if they do not sit the final exam. • Higher will progress to Advanced Higher

Senior Phase • Designed to build on achievements from the BGE • Provide a range of flexible learning pathways to meet learners needs • Promote a high level of attainment including literacy and numeracy for all • Meet the needs of our young people prior to them leaving school in s4, S5 and S6 • Promote and support employability skills, skills for learning, life and work.

Curriculum Changes Present model for option uptake: • S1 – 2: Broad General Education (BGE) • S3: still BGE, personalisation and choice within the 8 curricular areas • S4: start the Senior Phase or examination years Pupils Choose: S4 – 7 subjects S5 – 5 subjects S6 – 4 or 5 subjects (17 subjects max over 3 years) Timetable: S4 as a single cohort S5 and S6 together

  11. New Structure from August 2015 onwards S1 – 3 remain the same as before. Pupils choose: S4 – 6 learning experiences S5 – 6 learning experiences S6 – 6 learning experiences (18 subjects max over 3 years) Timetable: S4 - 6 as a single cohort

Opening up Learning To increase the options available to our young people: • All schools in South Ayrshire will implement the same model. • Access to the Consortium arrangements • Access to Ayr College courses from S4 onwards • Access to Work Experience placements which are linked to SQA qualifications. Qualifications for learning, life and work.

  13. Personal Achievement • Dynamic Youth Award • Duke of Edinburgh • Young Applicants in Schools Scheme (YASS) • Peer Education – Alcohol Awareness • Saltire Awards Qualifications at the point of exit to be better equipped for the future.

  15. Learner BDuring S4 this pupil may attend the Work-out Programme. Having had access to college, they may choose to leave at the end of S5. Engagement with STEP would enable them to access work at the end of S6.
