Founders Academician Angel Balevski IMSET at BAS1967 CorrespondingMember Ivan Dimov One of the greatest achievements in the field of metal science is the elaborated by Academician Angel Balevski and Corresponding Member Ivan Dimov "Gas counter pressure casting method", which is a scientific and technological novelty in the worldwide art for production of light alloy castings of high accuracy and high mechanical and technological characteristics. It also provides new conditions for treatment of the molten metals by gases and is a power tool for synthesis of new alloys. Established in 1967

  18. Technologies and systems for security and protection The IMSETHC is one of the leading organizations in Bulgaria in the field of national security and defense. The IMSETHC has 14 workshops (more than 650 acres building area) for developing and production of own devices and systems. The Institute has certification on the NATO quality assurance system AQAP-2110 and the ISO 9001:2000 quality management system. The IMSETHC is certified against NATO and EU requirements to access to classified information on level “Secret”. Team of scientists and specialists of the IMSETHC, working in various fields of the engineering sciences, has a long-years experience in creating, development and manufacturing of high-tech security and defense systems and products. As a result of close collaboration with the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense several families of highly effective products and systems were developed by the IMSETHC and were accepted for use with the Bulgarian Armed Forces. National center for anti-terrorist advanced systems http://bulcip.com The main efforts of the Centre are focused on the design, construction, testing and deployment of intelligent sensors, sensor systems, networks and technologies with applications in the field of security and defense. MAIN GOALS: 1. Investigations and developments of technical and operative conceptions for promising projects and technologies against terrorism. Carrying out investigations, development and experimentation of new technologies. 2. Providing adequate participation in: • National programs and projects for defence against terrorism; • NATO Defence Against Terrorism program; • Implementation of the European Strategy requirements for defence against terrorism; • The initiatives of the international network of centres of excellence in the field of anti- terrorism. 3. Providing synergy of the expertise in result of participation of R. of Bulgaria in NATO projects from the Program for Defence against terrorism (POW DAT). 4. Technologies and systems for security and protection The IMSETHC was involved in several international R&D defense projects: • NATO Program for protection of helicopters against RPGs – IMSETHC was leading organization; • NATO Program for harbor protection against terrorist actions; • NATO Program for development of anti-personnel mines alternative; • EU Project “Decision making on multivariate terrorist attack”, European Commission Programme „Prevention, Preparedness and Consequence Management of Terrorism and other Security Related Risks”, HOME/2010/CIPS/AG/019; • EDA Project “Improvement of the Urban Security and Defence Through the Implementation of Advance Detection Sensors' System” - IMSETHC won the project in competition with other 72 projects from Member States.   23. HOME/2010/CIPS/AG/019 Leading organization: Institute of Metal Science, Equipment and Technologies with Hydroaerodynamics Centre – BAS. Main Goal – Increase the capacity of key energy and transport infrastructure sites for the economy and the country's development, energy and transport infrastructure. First Module - “Business Impact Analyze of the “KOZLODUY” NPP’ System for removing the heat, its transforming into kinetic power of the Steam Turbine Rotation and Increasing the System Protection Against Terrorist Threats” Results: - Model for business continuity of the System for removing the heat and its transforming into kinetic power of the steam turbine rotation, which will form the basis of operation of nuclear power plants in the EU equipped with generators of type WWER-PWR - Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Finland; - Model for increasing the protection capacity of the System for removing the heat and its transforming into kinetic power of the steam turbine against anti-terrorist threats. Involvements and experience in the field of nuclear safety and security The IMSETHC was involved in several scientific projects in the field of Nuclear Safety and Security: - Stand and laboratory tests, author's control and supplies in full shift system for pre stressing of VVER-1000 reactors; - Laboratory commissioning for control of radioactive materials; - Providing scientific and technical assistance about program design for management of VVER reactors; - Testing and research of sample witnesses from the housing of VVER-1000 reactors; - Estimation analysis of the hosing resource of VVER -1000 reactors; - University of National and World Economy, Department: National and Regional Security, Specialty: Economics of Defense and Security with specialization „NUCLEAR SECURITY”, taught in English, Course: Physical Protection Technologies, Systems and Equipment.   25. Periodicals Engineering Sciencesis the most significant Bulgarian academic journal in the field of engineering sciences. It is issued since 1964 in Bulgarian and English, 4 numbers per year. IMSET at BAS1967 Journal of Materials Science and Technology is the most significant periodical in metal science in Bulgaria. It is issued since 1993 in English, 4 numbers per year. Scientists and university lecturers from about 40 countries publish in the journal their achievements and ideas. The relative share of the foreign authors exceeds 50 percent. Established in 1967

Possible cooperation in the field of nuclear safety and security Prevention, detection, response and mitigation of the physical threats to the nuclear facilities and nuclear materials – main direction: • State-of-the-art analysis of physical detection technologies and risk scenarios, in the context of a specific critical infrastructure – nuclear facilities and nuclear materials; • Innovative (novel or improved), integrated and incremental solutions to prevent, detect, respond and mitigate physical threats to a specific critical infrastructure - nuclear facilities and nuclear materials; • Tools, concepts and technologies for combatting physical threats to a specific critical infrastructure - nuclear facilities and nuclear materials; • In situ demonstrations of efficient and cost-effective solutions; • Security risk management plans integrating systemic and protective physical aspects; • Establishment and dissemination throughout the relevant user communities of specific models for information sharing on incidents, threats and vulnerabilities with respect to physical threats; • Convergence of safety and security standards and the pre-establishment of certification mechanisms.
