  1. September 29 – October 3 Spirit Week

  2. Monday, September 29College/Sports Day! • Check in – Silent read • Review Apes article • On a ½ sheet of paper, summarize the main idea of Apes • Discuss summaries • Review Woodsongarticle • On the other side of your ½ sheet, summarize the main idea/ plot of Woodsong • Cross-text questions using CPS • Discuss answers

Tuesday, September 30Farmer/Outdoors Day!!!! • Check in – Silent read • Begin Peer Response (Peer Analysis) writing • This prompt is asking you to decide if the author did a good job of explaining the main idea. Could be anything: One of the traits, text structure such as compare/contrast, information/narrative. ONLY ADDRESS what the prompt is asking. • Read essay together and decide as a class if it’s good or bad. Fill in the graphic organizer together as a class. Point out each point of the organizer and check it against the checklist included in the test.

  4. Wednesday - Peer Response cont. • Check in – silent read • I will pass out Progress Reports. These are for YOUR eyes only. No one else cares about your grade. See me—on YOUR OWN TIME if you have questions. Check the no-names ON YOUR OWN TIME before you come ask me anything.  • Peer response 2nd example: Did the author develop this essay with interesting details and examples? Yes or No? ONLY ADDRESS THE ISSUE ASKED IN THE PROMPT!!!!! • Work with a partner to answer the question. Share as a class. • Work with a partner to find examples and details to support your decision. Share with the class. • Work with a partner to decide how the author helped you or hurt you as a reader. Share as a class. • Work with a partner to wrap up your conclusion. Share with the class. • If time – SRI reflection

Thursday, October 2, 2008 • Check in: silent read • Teacher will hand out graphic organizer, story, and Peer Response paper, flip charts • Peer Response on your own! • Does the author do a good job of organizing this piece of writing? YES OR NO? • Read story together and discuss prompt • What is the prompt asking of you? • ORGANIZATION!!!!! • Graphic organizer says “main idea” about the Winter Story. WE ARE NOT DOING THAT. CROSS IT OFF. • Before students write, go over the elements of organization they could address: • Use flip chart • lead, ending, transitions, staying on topic, flowing smoothly etc. • As well as how they would be affected as readers from both a well organized piece or an unorganized piece.

  6. Thursday Continued • Does the author do a good job of organizing this piece of writing? YES OR NO? • REMEMBER: ONLY ADDRESS THE ISSUE in the prompt!!!! • Students complete the graphic organizer and write their essays. • Double check your essays!!! • Do you say YES or NO, and restate the question? • Do you use at least TWO examples from the main text? • Do you say how it HELPS or HURTS you as a reader? • Do you have a conclusion that RESTATES your answer and WHY? • When you are done: • Staple your graphic organizer to your essay and put it in the “turn in basket” for your hour • Put your flip chart in the basket on the back counter. • Stack the stories at your table • Silent read, games, QUIETLY until everyone is done 

  7. Friday, October 3, 2008 • Check in = silent read Discuss parts of a story • Title & Author – duh! • Characters – main and major • Setting – when and where • Conflict – internal/external • Genre – type of story • Mood – the feeling you get • Theme – the lesson of the story

  8. Friday, continued • Grab your MEAP packets and rip out the page titled “Story Map” towards the back – recycle the rest! • In a group, of no more than 3 people, choose a children’s book • Read the book • Complete the story map

Agenda – for Friday - continued • As a group choose one of the following enrichment activities: • Design a new book cover for the book you read – must be in full color and done nicely! • Make a poster of your story map, with color! • Re-write the lead and ending of the story on a big piece of paper, and decorate it • Draw in-depth pictures of the main character/s – must be in color • Come up with a 5-box comic strip summarizing your book – must be in color
