“The Nature of Angels” Chapter 3
“The Nature of Angels” • PERSONALITY Here we are not referring to personality as that which manifests itself as description and reaction (“ a nice personality ” or “ a rotten personality ”), but as the essence of being a person. Can angels fit the category commonly conceived as persons?
“The Nature of Angels” DEFINITION OF PERSONALITY Archetype of personality. The definition of personality is not a focus on what man is , but what God is. God is basically a person. Scripture reveals to us that God has one essence and manifest His existence in three persons. This is the foundation of the doctrine of the Trinity, God the Father , The Son, and the Holy Spirit. As a person, God has the ability to create persons other than the persons of the Godhead. God is the archetype of all persons. Attributes of Personality. God’s personality is basically manifest in the possession and manifestation of three facilities: intellect, sensibility (emotion), and will. God alone is self – existent, and no creature can exist part from God. All persons are, as the result of God’s creation, self – conscious, self- determining, moral individuals. It is these qualities that distinguish persons from things or animals. As a model, if we demonstrate that something has intellect, sensibility, and will in the context of morality, that something we may call a person.
“The Nature of Angels” • DESCRIPTION OF ANGELS’ PESONALITY Elements. The Scriptures witness that angels have all three attributes of elements of personality. • Intelligence – As evidenced by their desire to learn of our great salvation in Christ (1Peter 1:12) and the ability to communicate intelligence in speech (Matthew 28:5). • Angels have emotions - Scripture bears this out. Struck with God’s power and wisdom, they respond to His wondrous works in creation with joy (Job 38:7) • Angels have wills. - Angels have self-determination; that is, they can choose from various courses of action and seek to carry one through. God appeals to their wills by commanding them to worship Christ, His Son (Hebrews 1:6). But in the case of some, their wills opposed the will of God. The leader of this willful rebellion, Lucifer, also called Satan (Ha-satan)
