Controlling this Information Explosion RSS ideally suited in an age where the amount of information is huge and constantly changing and we need to understand it all.. or least what interests us!

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary RSSis the connecting fabric of Web 2.0 services, providing the conduit for information flows between networked learning spaces. Content syndication or the re-use of information from others on the network, often described as mashups The ability to produce information rather than consume is what sets Web 2.0 services apart from the preceding phase of the web which comprises of static web pages linked by url’s. RSS is intrinsically collaborative! Network learning - Connected information - Collaborative spaces

  7. Welcometo the world of RSS and Web 2.0 Tools and Technologies XML Blogosphere Blogs are becoming more and more commonly used for communication between students and teachers. If you are blogging RSS is a superb way of connecting with your students’ learning. However, you do not have to have a blog you can just have an RSS reader eg Bloglines and be an active participant Example: Imagine asking your students to set up a blog and to collect evidence of their learning by posting relevant articles and images and discussions to the blog. They set up an RSS feed on their blog which you as their teacher subscribe to which allows you to see every post that is entered by the students in your group. You can make comments and provide feedback to the posts in writing or in audio (using ODEO). Instead of lugging home a bundle of assignments to mark you access and read their assignments posted to the blog. As a teacher you need not have to create a blog - having a Reader would suffice. Ideally you would have a list of RSS subscriptions of every student and see what they are doing, when they are doing it, after class or through DE.

Welcometo the world of RSS and Web 2.0 Tools and Technologies XML • So How do you do it – Mashup feed on blog • Navigate to del.icio.us and find a tag of interest and note down RSS feed address • Find a blog of interest and note down the RSS feed address • Navigate to flickr and find a tag of interest and note down the RSS feed address • Log into FeedDigest and enter the del.icio.us feed – this will include an account creation process if you do not have an account • Click on “Add more feeds to or edit this digest »” and add the feed address from a blog • Click on "Click here to add a feed to this digest" and add the feed address from flickr • Scroll down to the “Digest Layout / Template” section & select the "basic template" • Click the “Save Digest” and return to the control panel • Under your digest listing, click “get code” • In the Javascript section range and copy the code to the clipboard • Open your blog template and paste the code @ an appropriate place • View your blog • This mashup has its own feed which can also be viewed in an aggregator, return to FeedDigest and subscribe to the feed in Bloglines.
