  2. Alliance An agreement between two or more nations for a common goal.

  4. Nationalism The belief that people should be loyal to their nation.

  5. The “powder keg” of Europe The Balkans – south eastern Europe

  6. The Spark • Austrian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand, assassinated in Sarajevo • Killed by Serbian nationalist, GavriloPrincip

  7. Schlieffen Plan German military plan in WWI, to attack France via Belgium, rapidly defeat France & then move east to attack Russia.

  8. Trench Warfare A form of warfare in which opposing armies fight each other from trenches dug in the battlefield. • The land between the trenches is called “no-man’s land” Example: the Western Front WWI

  9. Unrestricted Submarine Warfare The use of submarines to sink, without warning, any ship found in enemy waters. Example: sinking of the Lusitania

  10. Total War A conflict in which a nation devotes all of its resources to the war effort.

  11. Propaganda One sided information designed to persuade people.

  12. Rationing Limiting the amount of goods people can buy – often imposed by governments during wartime.

  13. Armistice An agreement to stop fighting.
