The Higgs Mechanism (TU Dresden, Würzburg Univ)

The Higgs Mechanism (TU Dresden, Würzburg Univ). Particle (metal sheet) moves in Vacuum (Air) or Higgs field (Silicone Oil) with variable Mass (inclination angle) and can create Higgs Bosons (bull’s-eye bulge) YOU CAN TOUCH IT!. Crank. Air. Hight Adjustment. Inclination angle.

  1. The Higgs Mechanism(TU Dresden, Würzburg Univ) • Particle(metal sheet)moves in • Vacuum(Air) or • Higgs field(Silicone Oil)with variable • Mass(inclination angle)and can create • Higgs Bosons(bull’s-eye bulge) YOU CAN TOUCH IT! Crank Air Hight Adjustment Inclination angle Silicon oil Plate Bull’s Eye

  2. Suggestion for Demonstration • Movement of the plate in the air (= space without Higgs field) • Almost without friction  “massless” • Movement of the plate in Silicon oil (= space with Higgs field) • Non-zero friction, need force to accelerate  felt as having “mass” • Adjusting the inclination angle of the plate • Variation of the friction =variation of mass(NB: The equivalent particle property in nature is still unknown and presents one of nature’s big unanswered questions) • Fast movement at a large inclination angle (=high energy massive particles: bottom, top, W, Z ) • Silicon oil is set in motion • Buckling of the bulls eye= Higgs Particles (VISIBLE!) • In reality this “curl” of Higgs Field (= Higgs Particles)only travels an extremely short distance (~ fm = proton size)and then transforms into detectable particles
