Pre-activity Assignment and Assessment Activity:“Cell Engineers and Cell Detectives” • Post-activity Assessment • Assessment • Ask “detectives” to guess the function of the mystery cell, and explain why. • Ask “engineers” to respond. • Encourage discussions and clear up any misconceptions • Mini lecture • Mesophyll cells (photosynthesis) vs. storage cells • Both have (different types of) plastids • Goblet cells vs. neuronal cells • Both have extensive ER/Golgi (one for secretion, one for making membrane) • Clicker activities • Guess the functions of a series of cell types with specific organelle contents and structural features • Conclusions and Perspectives • Linking micro (organelles and cell function) and marco (organism level) • Inspire students to think about bigger questions • How are cells different (differentiation) • How does one cell (zygote) make different cell types following a spatial and temporal program (development) • How have all these cell types come into being (evolution)
