Imperialism The Age of Imperialism was a time period beginning around 1870 when modern, relatively developed nations were taking over less developed areas, colonizing them, or influencing them in order to expand their own power. Why do you think European countries along with the United States, thought they could take over another country to use for its own benefit? What do colonies symbolize? What happens if you are over taken and are a colony? ( what do you gain what do you loose?)

  3. What is Social Darwinism? Social Darwinism is a belief, popular in the late Victorian era in England, America, and elsewhere, which states that the strongest or fittest should survive and flourish in society, while the weak and unfit should be allowed to die. The theory was chiefly expounded by Herbert Spencer, whose ethical philosophies always held an elitist view and received a boost from the application of Darwinian ideas such as adaptation and natural selection.

Limit yourself to highlighting only key words in each category that you feel are most important. We will debrief the article when you are done, you have 15 minutes.

  6. Closure What were the causes of Imperialism? What are some of the places the US acquires during this time period? Can you explain for at least one HOW the US acquired it? ( record this on the back of your packet)
