  1. Challenges while Conducting Research on VAW Scenario of GEP TAF Pakistan

  2. Studies on VAW Conducted under GEP • Scoping study on prevalence of GBV in Pakistan •  Domestic Violence • Rape • Customary Practices • Sexual Harassment • Internal Trafficking

  3. Purpose of Conducting the Researches The process of TOR development was largely participatory and consultative within the team. • The scoping study done at the outset was largely used to identify the focus areas for the six research studies. • The studies were conducted to understand the knowledge, Attitude and Practices around VAW • To identify weak links, structures, services, support mechanisms that needed strengthening.   • To guide future GEP planning and programming.

  4. Why Conducting Research on VAW is Potentially Challenging? • Research intrudes into the private sphere or some deeply personal experience; • Generally the studies are concerned with deviance and social control; • It is sboutpowerful persons or the exercise of coercion and domination; and • It deals with things sacred to those being studied which they do not wish profaned.

  5. Challenges Specific to GEP Studies • Diversity; Cultural, religious, ethnic, geographic • In case of studies on Sexual Harassment and Rape GEP was unable to find any organization willing to undertake the studies lead to advertisement multiple times • Process of solicitation and re-solicitation caused delays effecting the conceived timelines of the project • Because of the security threats/security situation; the nature of studies had to be changed (like study on trafficking), which also effected the anticipated outcome • Raw data Vs. Analysis (case in point, studies on Domestic Violence and Customary Practices) • Biases of consultants/organizations • Value for money

  6. Learnings • Informed/demand driven policy advocacy; • Research is a very important tool to effectively inform the program; • Contextis very very important therefore one of the Primary questions to ask is; Can we generalize the findings? • Substantial involvement is required especially at the stage of questionnaire development; • It is very pertinent to ask for detailed outlines during every stage of the study; • Sole sourcing is the best tool when it comes to hiring for research studies. • Being discreet
