  6. Conference Program • The organizers and the international advisory committee are responsible for the conference program. • C11 recommends general guidelines for conferences. • Continuous improvement of conference program needed to adapt to the changing environment of Particle Physics research: • talks are available online with a delay of a few hours. • fewer, larger experiments. • conference talks are important for young physicists to obtain a scientific track record IUPAP C11

  7. IUPAP Young Scientist Prize C11 decided: Establish IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Particle Physics. • Criteria Outstanding contribution to Particle Physics. Up to 8 years of research after Ph.D. • Type of prize • 2 recipients every 2 years, given at ICHEP conferences. • Prize is a certificate, a medal, $1000 provided by IUPAP. • invited talk (after consultation with conference organizers). • C11 acts as Prize Committee, with the help of external referees. • First prize will be given at ICHEP-08. IUPAP C11

  8. IUPAP Young Scientist Prize Schedule: • August 2007: Prize Committee formed • October 2007: Prize Announcement • January 2008: Deadline for nominations • March 2008: Announcement of Winners • First prize will be given at ICHEP-08 in Philadelphia IUPAP C11

  9. International Instrumentation Conference C11 sees a strong need for an International Instrumentation Conference in Particle Physics sponsored by IUPAP for various reasons: • Global projects require a truly international conference. • HEP methods are used in other fields (medicine, photon science, astrophysics). An international conference will help to keep the center of activity and competence in our field. • Large participation of Particle Physicists at other instrumentation conferences, e.g. IEEE. This should continue, but it demonstrates the need for a major instrumentation conference in Particle Physics. • No intention to suppress successful, existing regionally organized conferences on instrumentation. IUPAP C11

  10. International Instrumentation Conference C11 Proposal and decisions: • Name of the Instrumentation Conference TIPP: Technology and Instrumentation in Particle Physics • KEK will be the host of the very first TIPP conference. • Date of the first TIPP Conference will be fixed after consultation with organizers of existing instrumentation conferences. • TIPP will have plenary and parallel sessions. IUPAP C11

  11. Assessment of scientific achievements in PP Motivation: • Widely used procedure (publication list and impact factors) not suitable in experimental Particle Physics . • Disadvantage at universities for particle physicists in competition with scientists in other fields. • Group leaders in Particle Physics have difficulties to convince colleagues that the assessment should be based on more factors: internal notes, talks, letters of recommendations, physics coordinator position, ... IUPAP C11

  12. Assessment of scientific achievements in PP Goal: • We need a catalogue of objective criteria, transparent to people outside of Particle Physics, for the assessment of scientific achievements in large collaborations. • for decision makers at universities, laboratories, prize committees. • for experiments: to adapt their procedures to allow excellent physicists to obtain a track record, which is understood outside of Particle Physics. • for young particle physicists: to have a bench mark for their scientific work. • for Particle Physics group leaders: to convince colleagues in other fields. IUPAP C11

  13. Assessment of scientific achievements in PP Action: • C11 created a WG to address this issue. • Participation of major experiments in particle physics. • First meeting during this LP07 Conference in Daegu. • Goal is to present a report before the summer 2008 with recommendations and proposals. IUPAP C11

  14. Farewell and thanks to LP 2007 in Daegu • Excellent and rich physics program. • Beautiful facilities, very good technical support and organization. • Exciting, striving city and country. • C11 is very pleased, many thanks to the organizers: Dongchul Son and the LP07 team. IUPAP C11

  15. ICHEP 2008 in Philadelphia, USA See you next year in Philadelphia, USA July 29 - August 5, 2008 IUPAP C11
