What is Junior Chamber? • Worldwide community of nearly 200,000 young active citizens and leaders with shared beliefs and purpose • Young people ages 18 to 40 • Members create positive change in themselves and their community • A grassroots network of nearly 5,000 Local Organizations • U.S. Junior Chamber and Junior Chamber International headquarters are based out of St. Louis

  10. It all began with a dream Founder Henry Giessenbier had a dream that through community involvement young people could become better citizens. He believed in a… “great purpose of fellowship, advancement and everything which would make a good boy a better boy, a good student a more proficient scholar and a good citizen a better citizen…”

Jaycee through the years Jaycees have played a role throughout the history of the United States. • 1923: “Get Out the Vote” Campaign launched to increase voter turnout. • 1927: The Jaycees worked with member Charles Lindbergh to develop the U.S. Air Mail Service • 1936: With Jaycees guidance, National Wildlife Federation established • 1959: With Jaycee support and effort, statehood was granted for Alaska and Hawaii • 1972: Operation Red Ball Campaign distributed over five million stickers to reduce fire fatalities • 1993: Jaycees Against Youth Smoking (JAYS) Campaign launched to reduce underage smoking • Raised Millions of Dollars for MDA, Relay for Life and to purchase land to establish community parks. • Visit www.usjaycees.org and www.usjayceefoundation.org

Passport to Civic Leadership • This program is designed to provide direction for a brand new member and get them involved immediately. • Completion of the “steps” is called a “degree.” There are a total of 10 degrees to complete. • Tasks include meeting attendance, participating on a project committee, helping run the Active Citizen Framework and more • More information about the program is in the USJC online library and found on the USJC app for phones.

JCI Active Citizen Framework • Empowers and activates young people to take ownership of their communities • Provides a framework for sustainable action that produces tangible results and measureable societal development • There are three integrated stages that will drive a community toward sustainable prosperity

JCI Active Citizen Framework Stage 1: Health and Wellness Projects related to this stage will address barriers that stand between citizens and healthy lives Projects related to MDG 1, MDG 5, and MDG 6 Stage 2: Education and Economic Empowerment This stage builds on the foundation of stage 1 to ensure the development of skills and opportunities related to economic growth, employment, gender quality and entrepreneurship. Projects related to MDG 2 and MDG 3 Stage 3: Sustainability Projects in stage 3 will prepare a community to maintain its successes by educating businesses and the public about their role in all types of sustainability. Projects related to MDG 7 and MDG 8

  37. Project Management Guide (PMG) • A Business Plan that covers every aspect of running a project to help plan a successful project. Includes: • Goal setting • Manpower needs/resources • Contingency planning • Budgeting • Schedule development • Project evaluation and recommendations • Formerly known as Chairman’s Planning Guide (CPG)

Project Management Guide (PMG) • Before you start the project, utilize the PMG to help plan the project by answering the first 7 questions. • Primary Purpose: Develop a concise statement of the need the project will address. States the one thing you want to accomplish • Brief Description: Tell the story (who, what, where, when, why, how the goal is aligned with the Jaycee Mission, Does the chapter have any history about the project) • List your SMART Goals: Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely

Project Management Guide (PMG) • Steps to Implementation: Identify the activity you need to complete, when you need to start and finish it, and who will be responsible • Critical Contacts: List all of the contact information for the critical people who will make this project happen • Materials, Supplies, Resources: What do you need and where are you getting it from • Budget: List the sources of income and expenses. They must balance! • Problems and Solutions: Think about what could go wrong before it happens and what you would do if it happens

Project Management Guide (PMG) • After you finish the project, answer the final 3 questions so that the next Chairperson can learn from you and keep building it better: • Solutions or Recommendations for the Future: If you had to do it all over again, how would you do it better • Measureable Results for each Goal: Measure completion of your original goals from • Project Summary: What is your “WOW” statement about the project • Project Benefit: How did this project benefit or impact individuals, the chapter, and the community
