What are the different types of ASD? • Autistic disorder (sometimes referred to as classic autism) • Asperger’s disorder (sometimes referred to as Asperger’s syndrome) • Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) (sometimes referred to as atypical autism) Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect)

  3. What are Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs)? Main areas of difficulty: • Impairment in social interaction • Impairment in communication • Restricted and repetitive interests, activities and behaviours Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect)

  4. How is ASD diagnosed? • an assessment which includes observing and meeting with the individual, their family and service providers • There is no single behaviour that indicates ASD • There are no blood tests that can detect ASD Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect)

Successful Strategies(adapted from Sue Larkey’s, ‘Making it Success’) Organisation • Provide equipment (sharp pencil)/ Limit equipment • Have all books required at table (colour coded/ labelled) • Transition (limit number of moves in classroom) • Get other students to help with organisation • Send notes etc in plastic sleeve Classroom • Schedules • Timetables • Photos (staff/teachers) • Individual instruction Motivation • Use special interests • Give a job • Use sensory • Use schedules to show sequence of activities – provide basic lesson plans to parents Social Skills • Ensure has focus/direction • Social stories (look on internet – Carol Gray great place to start) • Have clear role in group or partner activities • Ensure student is aware of rules before starting any games (i.e. when you play a game, different people win) Visuals • Photos/ Pictures • Visual cues • Black & white line drawings • Great ideas at www.dotolearn.comwww.icontalk.comwww.card.ufl.edu
