  3. Kick-off Activities • Countdown to the New Year Student Booklet from The Education Center, Inc. I Can Make It! I Can Read It! Winter ed.

  4. Pre-Assessment • Place magnetic numbers on chalk board in random order • Have children rearrange into descending order

  5. Instructional Activities • Building Background for the skill • Discuss with children reasons for counting backwards • count down for lunch • count down for cleaning up • count down for bed • count down to a special day using a calendar

  6. Read Books containing numbers in descending order • Ten, Nine, Eight by Molly Bang • Ten Little Ladybugs by Melanie Gerth • Five Little Ducks by Ariane Dewey • Ten Little Dinosaurs by Pattie Schnetzler • Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins • Ten Little Fish by Audrey and Bruce Wood

  7. Clothesline Activity: • String a clothesline between 2 chairs • Put clothespins on the line • Have students put paper jerseys on the line in descending order

  8. Number Sense: • Display 10 magnetic counters • Have students count them • Match the number to the set • Ask students what number you would have if you take one away • Find that number and match to the new set • Continue to 0

  9. Kinesthetic Activities • Practice making numbers using different media • Playdoh • Wikki-Stix • Paint • Shaving Cream • Water Painting • Sidewalk Chalk

  10. Gross Motor Activities • Sign language numbers (pause slide show and double click on picture to watch video) • 10, 9, 8…Blast OFF! (pause slide show and double click on picture to watch video)

  12. Formative Assessments • Student will be able to arrange numbers in descending order from 10-0.

  13. Enrichment • “Country Countdown” by Dr. Jean http://www.drjean.org/ • “Ten Little Indians” (or substitute special character of the season) • Counting down from 20 or 30

  14. Remediation • “Five Little Speckled Frogs” • Countdown from 5-0 • Use 5 fingers to count or other manipulatives

  15. Culminating Activity • Kindergarten classes will meet to make numbers with their bodies
